RecycleMania!
Every year, college and university recycling programs from across the country participate in the friendly competition known as RecycleMania. The goal of this 10-week-long event is to increase student awareness of campus recycling and waste minimization.
RIT participated in RecycleMania for the first time in early 2008. The school made a good showing in its first year and achieved the following rankings:
- 13th out of 88 in the Grand Champion competition, with a cumulative recycling rate of 38.60%
- 4th out of 180 in the Per Capita Classic competition, with a cumulative recycling rate of 55.51 pounds per person
- 86th out of 95 in the Waste Minimization competition, with a cumulative waste rate of 143.82 pounds per person
- 9th out of 200 in the Gorilla Prize competition, recycling a total of 789,852.79 pounds during the ten week competition
- RIT ranked #1 in New York for all of these competitions, except for Waste Minimization
In the 2009 competition, RIT maintained the high standard it set with the following rankings:
- 37th out of 206 in the Grand Champion competition, with a cumulative recycling rate of 38.33%
- 5th out of 293 in the Per Capita Classic competition, with a cumulative recycling rate of 47.52 pounds per person.
- 8th out of 293 in the Gorilla Prize competition, recycling a total of 690,813.20pounds during the ten week competition
- RIT ranked #1 in New York for its Per Capita Classic standings and earned an award from NYSAR3, the New York State Association of Reduction, Reuse and Recycling.
RIT is continuously scoring well in Recyclemania and learning a lot about what can be done to increase the campus’s recycling rate. Waste Minimization is an obvious area to focus on, both from Recyclemania 2010 and for the good of RIT year-round.
